Luigi Dallapiccola – Canti di Prigionia (1938-41)

Written as a response/protest to the racial laws proclaimed by Mussolini and similar to those in Nazi Germany; sets Latin texts by people imprisoned as political enemies, betrayed and sentenced in sham trials, and executed:   Mary Stuart (Queen of Scots), Boethius (6th-c. philosopher), and Girolamo Savonarola (15th-c. monk who promoted reforms in the Church).  Throughout each movement, the melody of "Dies irae, dies illa,"   from the Requiem or Mass for the Dead is woven into the instrumental parts, making a connection between the Day of Judgment and the events of Dallapiccola's time.

Darius Milhaud – scene from Les choéphores (1915-16)

Setting of Paul Claudel's translation of Aeschylus's Orestia; narrator (Electra), spoken chorus & percussion portray the violence, followed by a sung "Hymn to Justice."   The Choéphori ("libation bearers") bring sacramental drink to Agamemnon's tomb.
